About the Model

Flash Flood! was produced for the Flooding from Intense Rainfall (FFIR) research project by the University of Hull, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

It is based on real scientific data collected from the Thinhope Burn in Northumberland, before and after a dramatic flash flood which happened on 17 July 2007 when 82 mm of rain fell in less than six hours during heavy thunderstorms.
Just as rapidly as they rose the flood waters fall to leave behind a scene of devastation.
The once green and pleasant river bed is now a bare bed of rock.

Flash flooding is caused by intense rainfall. In summer, the hot weather makes moisture from the ground evaporate, and causes currents to form in the air. This leads to thunderstorms
