As rivers gather volume and arrive in land which is not so steep, the action of water flowing means that the rivers start to 'wander', eroding parts of the bank where the ground is 'softer' and wearing a new course for the river to follow.
Over time, these changes in direction mean that the river will broaden the valley it runs though, creating futrther meanders, and closing up old parts of the riverbed..
