There are a number of regular tasks which need to be done to help look after the river and its environs. This can be managing the scrub and trees on the areas of land owned by the Trust; regular 'balsam bashes' tackling the spread of Himalayan Balsam (and other invasives) along the river; water quality testing; riversearch and kick sampling for invertibrates as a measure of the health of the ecology.

Other support is needed for the outreach events which we undertake - working with schools or parties of walkers either along the river, or at exhibitions or visits. This may involve taking part in the activities themselves, or simply helping with the set up and oversight of the activity.

In 2019 we supported over 38 visits or events with schools, exhibitions and festivals, (including our own picnic!) cleared huge amounts of balsam, collected psyllids for a Commonwealth Institute study, and reported on the water quality, and pruned back the brambles and scrub in Allee's Meadow.
2020 and 2021 were both of course less active, but we still undertook a range of the essential maintenance tasks, whilst 2022 saw much of our regular work programme in place, focussing on Allee's Meadow, but also seeing an uptake on school visit and other outreach activities.

We are building our programme of extended water testing, and are now coordinating work with other groups in the Wey catchment with over 60 sites being tested fairly regularly. We expect this to grow as an activity, and hope that even more of the river can be monitored and reported each month.
